Best Concealed Carry Insurance (2021 Comparison by Lawyer)

Best Concealed Carry Insurance Feature Image

The Crime Prevention Research Center (CPRC) has recently estimated that there are more than 15 million Americans who own a concealed carry license and are permit holders in the United States. Whether you plan to carry your gun with you since you have a concealed carry permit (CCW) or simply plan to store it in your vehicle, odds are that you understand the possibility of having to use a firearm to defend yourself, your loved one, or an innocent victim of a violent crime.

However, if you were to use lethal force even without firing it, you should understand you may have to face an expensive and time-consuming legal battle. The hard truth is that many armed citizens do not know the legal minefield they step into once they pull the trigger – even if it’s for self-defense! Despite no criminal charges filed, the attorneys in our litigious society will immediately jump at the opportunity to make it difficult for armed citizens in a civil court. The sad reality is that defending a life with a firearm may just cost you your life savings, families, and jobs.

Realizing this, several organizations have recognized the need to come up with an insurance coverage plan for armed citizens. Several insurance companies that offer some of the best concealed carry insurance programs on the market include the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) insurance, Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network, U.S. Law Shield, CCW Safe, Second Call Defense, and Firearms Legal Protection.

Know Better: What is Concealed Carry Insurance?

CCW insurance is insurance protection that helps you out financially in possible criminal prosecution or civil lawsuits you may be involved in from firing off in self-defense. You need to know that you may still be prosecuted even when you’ve used your CCW firearm in self-defense. Whether the evidence does not exonerate your or anti-gun prosecutor decides to make you as an example, you’re still going to need money to bail you out of jail and hire a defense attorney.

The legal financial cost will quickly climb even if you don’t have a criminal case. You even run the risk of a potential judgment against you and having to get a retrial, or even multiple lawsuits happening at once. Not only will the court case eats away your savings, but you may even lose your income during ongoing cases.

Depending on which CCW insurance you opt for, some of these costs are covered as part of their policy. Some organizations, even give you a per diem to offset any lost income during the trial on top of giving you access to useful add-ons such as counseling and property repair.

Whether to get concealed carry insurance or not is 100% an individual’s choice. However, concealed carry insurance is a much higher price to pay per month compared to the insurmountable cost later. Regardless of how much monthly budget you’ve set aside for this, here are a few questions that you can ask yourself before making the final decision:

  • What is the likelihood of using your firearm in self defense?
  • Do you have the financial reserves to defend yourself?
  • How will a financial hit this size affect you and your family?
  • Factors to Consider in Concealed Carry Insurance

Whether you’re keeping your firearm at home, in the car, or if you practice concealed carry, you need to know that policies only cover certain things. Hence it is why it is so important for you to take the time to read through and understand what each option offers and whether they’re a good fit to protect you after a righteous shooting.

Here are a few essential coverage areas that you should expect to see in a good plan:

Attorney Fees

Criminal and civil defense does not come cheap and you can easily expect to foot a six-figured bill if your case goes to trial. That’s why it is important that your concealed carry insurance coverage plan should include attorney fees and it is also a good idea for you to review if the policy covers retainer, criminal defense, civil defense, and other damages.

Bail Bond

Bail-bond coverage is typically found in a good concealed carry insurance policy as everyone knows that spending time in jail is a miserable experience that may even be detrimental for some. Not only that, but it is also a waste of time as you need to continue to earn a living, consult with your attorney, and keep your affairs in order.

Coverage Across State Lines

Different states have different insurance laws, which can be a little problematic if you travel across states with your firearm. If you’re a frequent traveler, you might just want to check out the fine print to know which areas are covered under the policy.

Expert Add-ons

Knowledge is power and one of the best ways to protect yourself from legal ramifications of a lethal-force event is to arm yourself with a good understanding of the law and your rights. Several CCW insurance policies offer clients access to solid and well-researched resources and training options that will make you a more proficient armed citizen.

Other Areas of Coverage

Many good concealed carry insurance policies go above and beyond just legal expenses as they offer coverage for other aspects that you might not have taken into consideration such as:

  • Incident Scene Clean Up
  • Negligent Discharge
  • Spouse and Family Self-Defence
  • Property Damage
  • Firearms Replacement
  • Work Loss Coverage
  • Personal Use of Firearm (non-defensive)

Depending on your intended use of your weapon, you may find these coverages by certain concealed carry insurance plans worth contemplating. Some may already have them included in the policies themselves, but some may also require extra charges to include them. Yes, insurance for concealed carry may be expensive, but it is definitely worth the investment considering how quickly expenses can multiply if you ever find yourself in a self defense situation where you need to pull the trigger.

Policy Caps

All insurance policies have caps, which is a set amount of money that it will cover. Anything beyond that amount will have to be paid for by you. This is the same for any other add-ons you might have selected for your plan.

Though your budget dictates how much concealed carry insurance plan you can afford, but you need to make sure you do not undercut yourself and should get something along the lines of $250,000 coverage limits for attorney’s fees. This may sound a lot, but it will definitely shelter you from a fraction of the total expense.

Additional Features

Picking Your Own Attorney

Having the freedom to pick a reliable attorney can make a world of difference to your criminal defense case. While some concealed carry insurance providers will only offer protection if you use their attorney they pick, it is best to go for one that lets you get an attorney you have confidence in. This way, you will never worry about whether they’re doing what is best for you or what is cheapest for the insurance company.

Get Paid a Per Diem During Trial

On top of having to fork out a load of cash for legal fees, you may also run the risk of losing your income during months of trial. Although legal fee coverage is great, it does not help pay your mortgage or support your family. If possible, it is a good idea to invest in a concealed carry insurance option that provides daily compensation during a trial.

Get Upfront Money

Not every Carry Concealed insurance provider offers upfront payment. You will need to first pay the amount with your own money and the CCW insurance provider will reimburse you after. Even though getting reimbursed is better than nothing, it’s also great to not have to dig for funds and raise hundreds of thousands of dollars on your own.

The Best Concealed Carry Insurance Review – Thoroughly Analyzed

Here is a list of the best concealed carry insurance in the market:

1. The United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA)

As one of the most established and largest concealed carry insurance companies, the USCCA reviews prove that is an excellent option that offers good coverage and plenty of extra features. Although the United States Concealed Carry Association comes in at the highest monthly cost, members are offered an amazing list of features and benefits which include an online training library and checklist, guides, and even a monthly magazine.

With three levels of coverage to choose from, USCCA offers plenty of flexibility for you to also tailor your policy to your budget and needs (if you want to compare with US Law Shield, here’s our complete review on USCCA vs U.S Law Shield). Not only that, but it also gives you the choice to choose your preferred attorney, both in and outside of their network.

The only downside we see, other than the high monthly cost, is that the insurance company only gives you upfront payments for bail bonds and criminal defense. The bail is also deducted from your criminal defense cap which also covers your lawyer’s retainer fee. While this is not a deal-breaker, it is worth considering while on the hunt. Also, if you live in New York or Washington state, you will need to search for another insurance policy as USCCA is not available in those states.

Overall

If you’re looking for a reliable all-around concealed carry insurance, then the USCCA is a viable option. However, if the extra features and highest per diem amount don’t matter much, then you can probably save some money and invest in other options that provide higher legal defense costs coverage.

Pros

  1. Most features
  2. Guest training
  3. Highest daily per diem
  4. Ability to choose your own legal practitioner

Cons

  1. Highest cost
  2. Capped coverage

2. CCW Safe

CCW Safe is an excellent choice for CCW insurance thanks to their unlimited and upfront coverage of certain legal expenses. On top of providing up to $1 million of civil damage protection through their basic permit-holder plan, CCW Safe also offers a multitude of options, including policies for constitutional carry states, home-defense and active and retired law enforcement with 100% CCW coverage of the following costs in advance:

  • Criminal Defense
  • Civil Defense
  • Administrative Defense
  • Private Investigators
  • Expert Witnesses

While most focus on unlimited criminal and civil defense coverage, they tend to also forget about how much private investigators and experts can cost. Fortunately, CCW Safe has them all covered for better peace of mind. Other than that, the organization also includes spousal coverage in 47 states as well as the rest of your family living in your home. This is great as other CCW insurance providers will require you to pay more for multi-state coverage.

Additionally, CCW Safe has some of the best case managers and senior legal teams to help you out in your legal case. The organization even has Andrew Branca of the Law of Self Defense as an advisor and expert for court cases and a regular newsletter on Andrew’s review of current cases.

While the plans offered by CCW Safe are very comprehensive, there are still a few downsides to it. The organization lets you choose an attorney, but it has to be someone that has been vetted by CCW Safe first. Although this may bother some people, it could also be a plus point for you since CCW Safe ensures you pick an effective criminal defense attorney to protect you instead of spending money on someone doing a bad job.

Also, the constitutional carry plan by CCW Safe only works in the state you live in, meaning you’re no longer protected once you cross the state line. Other than that, there are also certain conditions that will negate the policy, such as the use of force against a family member or someone in your residence.

4. Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network (ACLDN)

Armed Citizens Legal Defense Network (ACLDN) offers great perks in terms of legal, self-defense, and firearms areas at your disposal to give you true firepower when you go to trial. Although no per diem, the ACDLN is a decent option for Concealed Carry coverage that also lets you pick your own lawyer.

In terms of features and benefits, ACLDN is nowhere near the coverage offered by USCCA but the network does provide more monetary support for criminal, civil, appeals, and retrials at a reasonable monthly payment. However, there is a fine print to their unlimited coverage and that is the organization will only cover up to half of their defense fund. Considering how large their defense fund, they should be able to cover more than any other fixed amount for now.

One thing to note is that the ACLDN is not an insurance plan, instead, it is more like a pre-paid legal service. That is why you may not see as many features and benefits compared to other policy plans on offer. ACLDN also does not cover civil damages or compensation while you’re in court. Other than that, any monetary support past the initial $25,000 will have to go through a review board before it gets awarded. ACLDN also does not offer tiered membership programs, it is a one-size-fits-all type of organization.

Membership

  • Initial 1-Year Membership $135, 1-Year Membership Renewal $95
  • Up to $25,000 Cash to Member’s Lawyer if Involved in a Self-Defense Incident

  • Monthly Journal

Pros

  1. Unlimited Coverage
  2. Low Cost

Cons

  1. Coverage Limited to Legal Defense Fund
  2. No Per Diem Rate

5. U.S. Law Shield

US Law Shield (formerly known as Texas Law Shield) offers one of the lowest monthly rates and unlimited coverage amounts for both criminal and civil affairs. This is a budget option that gives you incredible peace of mind, considering how quickly legal expenses can add up.

However, unlike the two plans discussed above, US Law Shield does not give you the choice of picking your own legal practitioner. You’ll have to use a lawyer from their network of their choosing. This is a potential deal-breaker for some as paying a bad attorney a lot of money will not help with your case if you are going ahead with US Law Shield..

Other than that, many of the coverage areas that are pretty standard in other policies are add-ons, geographically limited, or simply unavailable here. The US Law Shield plan is also only available in 44 areas, those living in Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, New York, and Rhode Island will have to search somewhere else.

Despite the lack of features, there is also plenty of positive feedback from those who have used US Law Shield and they may just be the right one for your needs. Here are US Law Shield membership details:

U.S. Law Shield Membership

  • Individual: $10.96 per month or $131.40 per year
  • Two Adults: $21.90 per month or $240.00 per year

Legal Resources

  • Cap-Free Attorney Fees for Criminal and Civil Proceedings
  • 24/7/365 Access to Attorney-Answered Emergency Hotline
  • Non-Emergency Access to Independent Program Attorneys

  1. Low Cost
  2. Unlimited Coverage

Cons

  1. No Per Diem
  2. No Choice of Attorney
  3. Lack of Features and Benefits

6. Firearms Legal Protection

It may be overshadowed by the larger players like NRA Carry Guard and USCCA; Firearms Legal Protection still offers impressive coverage with their tiered insurance program that lets you choose a plan that best fits your budget and needs. At only $12.95 a month, FLP’s entry level options provide an uncapped attorney and legal fees for criminal and civil cases, making it a pretty impressive choice to consider.

Obviously, the more expensive plans on offer include some of the total coverage that you may be looking for such as the inclusion of firearm loss protection, compensation while in court, and the ability to choose your own attorney. In addition to that, all FLP plans to cover against Extreme Risk Protection Order, or “Red Flags” laws and accusations.

However impressive the uncapped attorney fees are for the entry-level program, you need to remember that it is only applicable to self defense shooting happening in your town. You’ll need to pay slightly more for nationwide coverage. In any case, Firearms Legal Protection is only available in 30 states, limiting their plans geographically.

  2. Cover Against Extreme Risk Protection Order

Cons

  1. Only Applicable for 30 States
  2. Fewer Benefits and Features

Conclusion

If you’re a legally licensed owner of a firearm, then you should know that there may come a time when you are required to fire off your weapon. During such scenarios, you may want to get an advocate rather than rely on a public defender who might not have a full grasp of self-defense or even any sympathy for an armed citizen. It’s no surprise that not many attorneys sympathize with gun owners even when they fire in self-defense.

With that in mind, you can choose to take your chances with a public defender or rely on experts associated with self-defense insurance membership programs. The above guide is some of the best concealed carry Insurance plans, there is on offer in the U.S. and you can tell that the organizations have put a lot of effort into the defense coverage they provide to benefit armed citizens. Pick the right insurance policy so you will be at the best when it comes into defense situation.
